Communications Committee

If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life that it supports. The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also received his last sigh. The wind also gives our children the spirit of life. So if we sell our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers.

--Chief Seattle

Chief Seattle’s words inspire the Communications Committee in our work to protect the natural treasures of Washington State for generations to come.

The Communications Committee’s mission is to promote and strengthen public awareness of the Washington State Chapter’s work and to promote volunteer activities and upcoming events to our membership, donors and the public at large. We also spread awareness of our Chapter’s legislative priorities and environmental successes. From promoting volunteer opportunities, to informing the public of the urgent issues facing the voters of Washington State, our work touches on all aspects of our Chapter’s work and spans every Committee.

We communicate the Washington State Chapter’s priorities and successes by:

  • Creating and distributing the Cascade Crest newsletter and the CrestOnline e-newsletter. View an archive of past issues.
  • Maintaining the Cascade Chapter web site and other social media mediums including the Chapter's Facebook page and Twitter page.
  • Encouraging the public, donors and current and potential members to participate in Chapter activities
  • Standardizing guidelines and processes across our communications outlets
  • Soliciting news items, articles and program announcements from Committee and Group Chairs, members and donors

In 2011, the Committee took on:

  • Carrying the mission statement of the Sierra Club to preserve resources one step further by moving from paper to pixels by transitioning the print version of the Cascade Crest into an e-newsletter. View the inaugural edition of the CrestOnline!
  • Launching our Twitter page and improving the Chapter Facebook page by partnering with our fellow Washington Sate environmental organizations to provide timely news and actions that support our legislative agenda.

In 2012, we're working on:

  • Updating and redesigning our web site to make it easier for members, donors, volunteers and the public to learn about the Chapter’s priorities and get involved
  • Publishing more electronic newsletters as we continue to reduce the use of paper in our Chapter

Our Committee is made up of writers, editors, marketers, public relations professionals and web communicators. If you enjoy the written word and are excited about our mission, we hope you’ll join ! If you'd like to get involved, please contact Communications Committee Chair Lisa Keating at the Chapter office (206) 378-0114 or visit her profile page.
