Steve Bernheim: City Council #6, Edmonds

Steve Bernheim supports public participation and open accountable government: he was active in motivating the City of Edmonds to open up the waterfront development planning process to all. He supports enforcement of sensible zoning laws and respects historic preservation of downtown Edmonds. He and his neighbors successfully sued the builder of an illegally oversized downtown development; he thinks neighborhoods should receive substantial community benefits if developers want concessions beyond what the zoning law allows.

Steve serves on the Citizen Advisory Transportation Committee, gathering consensus for use of plug-in electric cars and biodiesel fuel by the City. As member of the Mayor’s Global Warming Committee, he advocates for renewable power and energy conservation programs and has proposed anti-idling and sustainable construction regulations. He believes that new development, particularly large projects, should be assessed in terms of habitat preservation and greenhouse gas impacts; Edmonds has pledged to significantly reduce greenhouse gas output over the next ten years, so clearly, business cannot continue as usual.
