Cool State Forum: Cool Companies-Real Action & Discussion On Engaging More Businesses.
Location: REI- Seattle (map) doors open at 6:30
Please join us in a fun and lively discussion. Global warming is a significant business issue—not only in terms of corporate social responsibility—but as a key business risk and opportunity. Operating costs, regulatory uncertainty, shareholder resolutions and consumer expectations are some of the many factors motivating companies to directly confront the climate challenge. Scientists tell us we need to reach a reduction in greenhouse gas pollution of 80% by 2050 – and businesses have a large part to play in reaching that goal.
At the Cool Companies Forum, participate in discussion on how businesses can be a part of the solution to global climate change. The agenda includes how to engage more businesses and how businesses can decrease their carbon footprint. Hear from those who have already started this process and how you can get involved to make your business or employer a Cool Company too.
Please RSVP to help us plan ahead. Email or call the Sierra Club at 206.378.0114 x308 or Jessica.eagle@sierraclub.org.
Find out what role you can play by attending our monthly Cool State Forums. Statewide and regional solutions will be discussed, including “cap & trade,” tolling, solutions in schools and businesses, and a new green economy that provides good, green jobs.Climate change is real, it’s here, and it is quickly becoming the greatest environmental challenge of our time. While climate scientists are continually converging on stronger consensus about the realities of climate change and its impacts, some say our responses about what to do as individuals and as a society have not made enough progress. Others point to the economic opportunities of a new, green economy and to our state’s position at the forefront of climate change action.
Background on the Governor’s Executive Order and the Climate Advisory Team:
In February 2006, Governor Gregoire issued an executive order establishing statewide goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, to 25% below this mark by 2035 and to half of 1990 levels by 2050.
Governor Gregoire also set a goal for 2020 of tripling our number of clean energy jobs and of reducing our imported fuel expenditures by 20%. Thinking through how we can achieve these goals was the task of a broad stakeholder process called the Climate Advisory Team. The team just released its first report of action recommendation.
