Backpack - PTARMIGAN TRAVERSE, North Cascades Crest to Glacier Peak Wilderness
This is a 25 mile 7,500 ft. elevation gain, strenuous backcountry snow camp outing--leaving Thursday evening and returning Monday evening. The legendary Ptarmigan Traverse begins at Cascade Pass in the shadow of North Cascades National Park's 8,065 ft. Johannesburg Mountain and traces nearly 25 miles of the Cascade Crest, cutting across ridges and cirques to the north side of 10,541-ft. Glacier Peak in the Glacier Peak Wilderness Area. The off-piste skiing and climbing along the traverse are challenging --but, the payoffs are unrivaled. Bombing down the 3,000 ft. corn-choked couloirs while supreme views of frozen lakes and tumbling glaciers spread out before you. "The trip is equivalent to the 'Haute Route' in the Alps, but in a Wilderness setting." Requires experience in snowcamping, backcountry skis and skins, ability to backpack 15 miles/day and references. You will need to bring water and a water filter and a share of the food. Preregistration required by July 3; Participation limited. Fee $15.00. This outing is open to the public.
