Seattle has long been a leader among cities not just in our state but the nation. Right now, you have a historic opportunity to not elect a candidate with a passion for the environment but an environmentalist with a passion for change!

Michael McGinn, a long time volunteer leader at the Sierra Club, has a record of making tough decisions that have made a real environmental difference. His leadership in our campaign to defeat Prop 1, the Roads and Transit ballot measure, prevented the construction of 182 miles of new suburban highways. He successfully led the Seattle’s Pro-Parks Levy, winning popular support for protecting and improving our parks and recreation facilities. The Sierra Club’s greatest challenges, stopping global warming and protecting wild places, are tied to how we plan and build our cities. We need a mayor who understands these issues and their impacts on our environment. Michael McGinn is that man. He has worked in Seattle to build broad and diverse coalitions for livable, sustainable urban environments through The Seattle Great City Initiative, a non-profit organization he founded. McGinn has also worked with City Government as a leader of Sierra Club, as a member of Seattle’s Green Ribbon Commission and as President of the Greenwood Community Council, helping our leaders make the right decisions for the people and ecology of Seattle.

His opponent, Joe Mallahan, has no record of civic involvement, no clear stance on global warming, and no experience in city planning. At the time of writing this article, he even said he opposes pieces of the transit expansion approved by voters just last fall. That’s not the kind of leadership we need.

Seattle voters value our environment and understand the serious challenges we all face: climate change; the critical state of Puget Sound; and fundamental problems with Seattle’s transportation. Our next mayor must make bold decisions, address initial resistance, and build broad and effective coalitions to help Seattle protect and enhance our environment.
