Mike O’Brien will bring Sierra Club leadership to Seattle’s City Council.

It’s our pleasure and privilege to ask you for your support of Mike O’Brien, the second Sierra Club leader, running for office this fall!

The Sierra Club endorses Mike O’Brien for City Council, Position #8, because of his environmental leadership in Seattle and his cohesive vision for our city. As Chairman of our Board, O’Brien led the Sierra Club in our successful efforts to bring light rail to the Puget Sound without the baggage of 182 miles of unnecessary roads. He also brought strength and influence to the Sierra Club’s Cascade Chapter as a whole. O’Brien’s ability to build organizations and his environmental knowledge has helped make our city an example for the rest of the nation. His ability to effectively work with people on the issues that matter most will make him an excellent member of our City Council!

Seattle now faces economic hardship, unwise investments into wasteful road projects and increasingly unaffordable housing. O’Brien still rejects the “political reality” and instead works for what we really need. “We can’t say we care about global warming and then push for projects that cost billions of dollars and only make global warming worse.” Sierra Club agrees.

Investment in transit, schools and livable communities will provide the urban environment needed for Seattle residents to live near job centers without reliance on cars. With an ever-increasing local population, the declining health of Puget Sound, and the worsening effects of climate change, Seattle needs the pragmatic and comprehensive solutions O’Brien proposes.

O’Brien lives out his commitment to sustainable living by commuting on our bike paths and transit system, raising his family in the urban core, and convincing others to care for our environment. As a lifelong Seattle resident, MBA-holding Chief Financial Officer, and environmental leader, Mike understands the solutions needed for Seattle and the environment.
