Nick Licata: City Council #6, Seattle

In his long and popular tenure on the Seattle City Council, Nick Licata has proactively fought for a livable, sustainable and culturally rich urban environment. Licata provided leadership in making our streets safer and more useful for bicyclists and pedestrians, in keeping our Urban Villages affordable and serviced by mass transit, and in providing natural places for Seattle’s residents. Licata understand that Climate Change pollution must be confronted right here in Seattle to protect our own our public health and welfare. “The City of Seattle must continue down the road to creating a more sustainable environment that can accommodate both growth and our quality of life, by moving to reduce our overall carbon footprint.”
As creator and chair of the Pedestrian Safety Committee, Licata was instrumental in producing the Pedestrian Master Plan and improving access to public transit. He is a major proponent of proper funding for the Bicycle Master Plan and voted for funding to complete the Burke-Gilman Bike Trail. Licata supports transit-oriented development, incentive zoning to keep housing affordable, and incorporating residents and business owners in the city planning process.
Nick Licata has stated, “The easiest and simplest way to begin our transformation from a society dependent on the single occupant vehicle is to begin to think of how we can meet many of our immediate needs locally. Vibrant local neighborhood business districts accessible by wide sidewalks, well lit crosswalks, clearly marked bike lanes, and reliable and frequent bus service create an environment where people can walk or bike or take public transportation to do much of their shopping or recreation.”
In addition to his outstanding work on transit, Licata has helped keep our Emerald City green. As Parks Committee Chair, he led the Council in the development and implementation of the ProParks Levy. He also successfully led efforts to daylight Ravenna Creek and Thornton Creek. Looking forward, Licata believes it is time for Seattle to adopt a Green Streets policy to fight storm water pollution and protect Puget Sound. He also supports the Green Bag Fee (Referendum #1), which will help keep plastic toxics out of Puget Sound.
Throughout his service on the Seattle City Council, Nick Licata has acted on his environmental values. The Sierra Club knows that we can count on Licata to continue to help Seattle lead the nation and the world towards a sustainable way of life. Vote Nick Licata for Seattle City Council!
