John Creighton: County Port Commission #1, King County

During his first term as Port Commissioner, John Creighton has been a leader in increasing environmental stewardship and public accountability at that Port. At the seaport facilities, Creighton spearheaded requirements that prohibited cruise ship dumping in the Olympic Marine Sanctuary, and mandated the use of low sulfur diesel or shore power by cruse ships when in port. Creighton lead the way in approving the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy, a multi-port initiative to reduce port related air emissions. He also took the lead developing a cost sharing agreement with King County for upland disposal of contaminated sediments instead of dumping them in the Sound.

At the airport, Creighton has worked with airline tenants and airport staff to establish targets for emission reduction. Part of this has been the installation of air supply infrastructure and electrical plug-ins so that aircraft don’t have to run their engines while at the gate.

In the community, Creighton fought for approval to go above and beyond federally mandated requirements for cleaning up PCB-contaminated soil at Terminal 117 in the South Part neighborhood, and has fought for a $5 million project to improve storm water management and cleanup at Port properties.

During his next term, we believe that Creighton will continue to promote policies that protect our environment and maintain our quality of life.
