1033: Vote NO (State Initiative)

Times are tough enough. Let’s not make them worse. Vote No on I-133.

I-1033 is Tim Eyman’s latest bad idea for Washington—and may be his worst yet. In fact, I-1033 would not only have disastrous effects on our ability to preserve our environment, but would hurt our schools, our health care system, and even slow our economic recovery. The huge coalition of organizations and businesses opposed to I-1033 is a reflection of just how bad an idea it is. I-1033 is opposed by everyone from the Children’s Alliance to AARP of Washington, Microsoft, the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, the Low Income Housing Alliance, The Washington State Hospital Association, Association of Churches, Labor Council, the PTA, and many, many more.

Here are just a few reasons the Sierra Club asks you to vote NO on I-1033:

  • I-1033 threatens our environment and way of life. The recession has already forced the state to cut funding for natural resource programs by 25%. I-1033 would deepen cuts, hindering efforts to prevent global warming, protect wild places, and clean up Puget Sound.
  • I-1033 would permanently lock in low levels of funding for conservation and the environment. Not only would there be additional cuts to essential programs, but I-1033 would make it impossible to restore funding when the economy recovers.
  • I-1033 will slow Washington’s economic recovery, and hurt our schools and health care. The national recession has already cost our state thousands of jobs and forced billions in cutbacks to important services, like education and health care. In the same way it would set back efforts to protect and preserve the environment, I-1033 will mean deeper cuts to services—and lock them in for years—meaning more job loses, hard times, and a longer delay for our economy to recover.
