Jack Burkman: City Council #1, Vancouver

The Sierra Club Loo Wit Group has endorsed Jack Burkman in a previous race. He is a strong supporter of environmental issues. He has served on both the County Planning Commission and the Vancouver City Council in a previous four-year term.

Burkman worked on Growth Management Act implementation; first as a County Planning Commission member when GMA first became law and then as lead for the Vancouver City Council. Burkman was Chair for two of the four years he was on the SW Clean Air Agency Board. During that time, he led the organization to emphasize clean air as the outcome, instead of an emphasis on regulations. He was able to use his interest in conservation in the private sector while he worked for Hewlett Packard in the development of recyclable and reusable printer components.

We can continue work toward a cleaner, less congested city. Jack sees the need to improve congestion problems, such as those at the Mill Plain/Chkalov intersection and on the I-5 Bridge, which contribute to air pollution and wasteful use of fuels. We can preserve open spaces through negotiations with developments, as they occur, and through REET funded park acquisition.

He also sees the need to encourage land use policies, which would minimize urban sprawl and long commutes to jobs and services. “The strongest action our local government can do is intelligently manage growth. The city can also partner with PUD and others to decrease energy consumption by individuals and businesses. The city also needs to continue to advocate for ever increasing use of mass transit and transportation plans that facilitate this.”

Please help support Burkman’s candidacy and be sure to vote in the November election. For more information please visit Jack Burkman’s campaign website.
