Max Vekich: County Port Commission #4, King County

Max Vekich was recruited by labor as part of their port reform slate. He has broad shipping industry experience in several Northwest ports, and currently works at the Port of Seattle.
As a legislator, he authored solid environmental laws, including successful pesticide legislation, and recently he has publicly stated that the Port could adjust if Seattle chose not to build a new highway tunnel. He has support from commissioners who currently align with Sierra Club issues, and also has support from other environmental organizations—Fred Felleman, of Friends of the Earth, is a strong Vekich backer.
Vekich has detailed knowledge of the inner workings of the Port. He informed us, for instance, that about half of the cruise ships in the harbor continue idling their diesels instead of powering their lights with the Port's new and very expensive dockside electrical hookups. Vekich needs more information on environmental issues but seems open to working with environmental groups to solve issues.
