Karen Smitherman: City Council #1, Tacoma
Posted on July 12, 2011 - 11:39am
Karen Smitherman has worked in the Tacoma School District for the last 35 years, primarily as a teacher. She has also served on and chaired the Tacoma School District Board and been a member of number of non-profit community organizations including the Sierra Club. She also has participated in community green space restoration work parties as an active volunteer. She proclaims strong environmental values and teaches her students sustainability and environmental protection principles and practices. She is politically experienced and knows the local scene. She has been a key campaign aide and strategist for her husband’s successful runs for the State Legislature and has been active in party politics. Her campaign is well-organized and planned. Though not a technical environmental guru, she is committed to seeking advice from our veteran Sierra Club champion on the Council, Jake Fey, who has endorsed her. Both the Sierra Club and Conservation Voters recommend the election of Karen Smitherman.
