Joe Tanner: County Commission #1, Clark County

Mr. Tanner was a State Legislator from 1983 to 1988. He stated that his two most “significant legislative contributions to environmental protection were support and creation of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, and HB 426, which ratified the Gorge Act Compact.” He also noted that he “fought hard to win passage of the pollution control tax credits bill, which incentivized Crown Zellerbach to clean up its Camas facilities.” Throughout his tenure in the Legislature, he said he consistently and actively supported environmental legislation.

Perhaps Mr. Tanner’s most impressive features are his energy, passion and clear articulation of issues directly effecting Clark County. For example, Mr. Tanner believes that water quality and quantity are Clark County’s most pressing environmental issues. The East Fork of the Lewis River is a priority for him. He feels that the county has a “poor track record” and needs to be “more aggressive” in protecting and restoring the East Fork, which has been affected by ongoing gravel mining. On other issues important to the Sierra Club, he stressed the importance of air quality, clean water, smart growth, healthy communities, the county’s rural plan, renewable energy and the Columbia River Crossing.

Mr. Tanner believes that “environmental protection and job creation are compatible and divisiveness serves no one and is counter productive.” He feels that Clark County must actively pursue a vision for the future which will develop it into a community that attracts clean, cutting-edge technology and manufacturing. Updating the county’s “outdated Community Framework”, due for review in 2013, will be a critical first step in this process, he said.

Mr. Tanner has a well organized campaign and has broad based support including business and labor. He is a viable candidate who will provide Clark County voters with a clear choice for the future. His vision, commitment and passion are assets which will serve Clark County well.
