Olgy Diaz: City Council #5, Tacoma
Posted on June 30, 2013 - 12:26pm
Ms. Diaz is currently working as a legislative aide for Rep. David Sawyer (29th LD). As a second-term Vice President of the Pierce County Young Democrats, she is a political activist with a strong focus on issues of women and the constituents of her predominantly blue-collar district. She has a good understanding of environmental sustainability and lives according to her green values. She has a real chance of beating her opponent, the ultra-conservative one-term incumbent Joe Lonergan. Mr. Lonergan has focused all his efforts in the Council on economic development and private sector solutions to city government challenges and of all the Council members has cast the most votes against the environment. He is lukewarm at best on accepting climate change as a problem and aggressively opposes dealing with it. Ms. Diaz has strong campaigning experience from working as a staffer for the Obama and Congressman Adam Smith campaigns. With her excellent campaign plan of door-belling, getting out the vote, having strong support from labor and women’s groups on the ground, it is definitely possible to win this seat back to a progressive like Ms. Diaz in this D-leaning district.
