Ken Downey: City Council #6, Ferndale

The City of Ferndale very quietly announced in April 2005 that a 1.1 million square foot mall and housing development, Pioneer Plaza, had been proposed on the edge of the Urban Growth Boundary (UGA) of Ferndale. This is in an area that is rural in character, and the mall development presents significant problems with water management, wildlife impacts and economic impacts to downtown Ferndale businesses. The Mount Baker Group opposes construction of the mall as it is currently envisioned. We evaluated candidates for three of the Ferndale City Council seats for their perspective on the mall, and future development in Ferndale. The endorsed candidates are all challengers to incumbents.

Ken Downey (Position 6) worked hard to protect Barrett Lake from development, and is serving on the Ferndale downtown revitalization committee.
